Personal Mission Statement

Storytelling saved me—and now I use it to save others. After the pandemic shifted the world, I found myself returning to the essential questions: What helps people heal? What empowers a child to dream? What stories are we censoring that must be told? Through Brightfield Publications and INK & IMPACT, I use every creative tool I have to advocate for truth, literacy, wellness, and voice. Whether I’m planting seeds in my garden or publishing books to nurture minds and spirits, I am rooted in one belief: words grow worlds. And I’m here to build them with love, boldness, and purpose—one page, one reader, and one life at a time.

Sonya Justice

Author. Filmmaker. Advocate. The Original TV Nurse™

Sonya Justice is a dynamic storyteller and multi-platform creative who uses words, wellness, and media to inspire personal growth and social change. She is the author of several titles and children’s book manuscripts, a documentary filmmaker, and the founder of Brightfield Publications—her independent press dedicated to producing books that educate, empower, and uplift.

Her publishing journey began in 2010 with the launch of Fabulous Nurse Magazine, a vibrant lifestyle magazine that reached over 100,000 print subscribers and helped shift the conversation around nurses and representation. The award-winning article “Inked! Nursing Tips from a Tattoo Parlor” recognized her skills as a writer. From 2013 to 2016, she also created and hosted The Reel Nurses Talk Show, which aired weekly on cable television, amplifying the voices of frontline nurses long before the pandemic made them heroes in the public eye.

In the wake of the pandemic, Sonya Justice sharpened her focus on the root causes of illness, the emotional and developmental needs of children, and the transformative power of storytelling. With a deepened sense of purpose, she began weaving together her passions—health education, early literacy, creative entrepreneurship, and documentary filmmaking—into one unified mission: to heal and uplift through truth-telling. This vision now fuels her work across every medium, from children’s books that foster resilience and self-worth, to entrepreneurship tools that empower women to rise, to directing/co-producing the upcoming groundbreaking documentary series INK & IMPACT, which examines the cost of censorship to literacy, identity, and access to truth. Whether through the tactile joy of a printed book or the visual depth of film, Sonya remains committed to illuminating lives—one story at a time.

In addition to her creative work, Sonya fosters human growth and development across the lifespan, drawing on more than 20 years of clinical nursing experience. She has volunteered at the Washington State School for the Blind, founded a Youth Wellness Program (est. 2018) to support teen mental health through life skills workshops, and launched the Foundation for the Advancement of Nursing & Public Health—an initiative that mobilized nurses to educate the public on critical health issues.

Her passion for storytelling extends to children’s literature, a dream seeded in 2010 and joyfully pursued starting in 2021. Her books span genres—from travel and wellness to women’s empowerment, entrepreneurship, and children’s education—reflecting her deep belief that stories can heal and transform at every stage of life.

Born Elsie Ekwa, she chose the pen name Sonya Justice as a tribute to her late parents. Formed as an anagram of their names, it honors their love and sacrifice, and serves as a legacy of remembrance and strength.

Known as The Original TV Nurse™, Sonya lives and writes in the Pacific Northwest. When she’s not working on books or filming her next project, she can be found hiking local trails, riding, enjoying the symphony, or tending to her organic vegetable garden as an avid urban farmer.
